Introduction
The NLSA’s commitment to ensuring a safe and secure learning environment for all learners is outlined in the Safeguarding Learners’ Policy. This policy intends to safeguard learners’ physical, emotional, and mental health as they engage in our programs and services.
Scope
This policy is applicable to all NLSA staff members, independent contractors, volunteers, teachers, business partners, and other interested parties who deal with learners. It includes all training initiatives and interactions that include learners within NLSA’s online environment.
Definition of Safeguarding
Safeguarding refers to the proactive measures taken to prevent and respond to any potential harm, abuse, neglect, or exploitation of learners. It includes the identification, reporting, and management of concerns related to learner safety and well-being.
Responsibilities and Reporting
All individuals associated with NLSA have a shared responsibility to safeguard learners. This includes:

- Recognising and reporting any concerns or signs of harm, abuse, neglect, or exploitation of learners promptly and appropriately to the designated safeguarding officer or authority – Dr Laurence H Brown, Director, (DSL Level 3)
- Cooperating fully with inquiries related to safeguarding concerns and providing accurate information as required.
- Respecting the confidentiality and privacy of learners involved in safeguarding matters, adhering to relevant data protection laws and regulations.

Risk Assessment and Prevention
NLSA will conduct regular risk assessments to identify potential risks to learner safety and implement preventive measures. This includes:

- Implementing policies and procedures that promote learner safety and well-being, including codes of conduct, anti-bullying policies, and online safety guidelines.
- Providing appropriate supervision, training, and support for employees, instructors, and volunteers who interact with learners.
- Promoting awareness and education programs for learners to equip them with knowledge and skills to safeguard themselves and others.

Reporting and Responding to Safeguarding Concerns
NLSA will establish clear procedures for reporting and responding to safeguarding concerns. This includes:

- Designating a safeguarding officer or authority responsible for receiving and managing safeguarding concerns and ensuring appropriate actions are taken. As of Q1 2023, this officer is Dr Laurence H Brown, Director, (DSL Level 3).
- Collaborating with relevant external agencies and authorities as necessary to investigate and address safeguarding concerns.

Confidentiality and Privacy
All information related to safeguarding concerns and investigations will be handled with strict confidentiality, following applicable data protection laws and regulations. Information will only be shared on a need-to-know basis and in accordance with legal requirements and best practices.
Training and Awareness
NLSA will provide awareness programs to employees, instructors, and stakeholders to promote understanding, recognition, and response to safeguarding concerns. These programs will cover topics such as identifying signs of abuse, reporting procedures, and creating a safe and inclusive learning environment.
Policy Review
This Safeguarding Learners Policy will be periodically reviewed and updated as necessary to align with changing circumstances, legal requirements, and best practices. NLSA will communicate any revisions or updates to relevant stakeholders to ensure continued compliance and understanding.
